Such a high ratio of senior citizens to the working-age population is common in rapidly aging countries such as Japan (360), Germany (316), and Italy (309). By comparison, in Russia today, there are fewer than 200 senior citizens per 1,000 people of working age.
These data are presented in a report by Evgeny Andreev, Leading Research Fellow at the HSE Institute of Demography, entitled ‘China’s Demographic Prospects’. More on the results of the study can be found on the OPEC.ru website (in Russian).

Mortgage and Demography: HSE Scientists Reveal How Mortgage Debt Shapes Family Priorities
Having a mortgage increases the likelihood that a Russian family will plan to have a child within the next three years by 39 percentage points. This is the conclusion of a study by Prof. Elena Vakulenko and doctoral student Rufina Evgrafova from the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences. The authors emphasise that this effect is most pronounced among women, people under 36, and those without children. The study findings have been published in Voprosy Ekonomiki.

On July 21, 2025, representatives from Peking University led by Zhang Jin, Vice President of Peking University and Chancellor of Shenzhen Graduate School, paid a visit to HSE University. The delegation included forty students, teachers, and administrators.
