Shalu Tomar, from Delhi, India, is a student of the Master’s in Population and Development. In her interview with the HSE News Service, Shalu talks about her decision to choose HSE University, her academic experience, and the importance of study–life balance.

My Studies

When I reflect on my journey, it feels like a beautiful blend of courage, learning, and growth. I’m from Delhi, India. Currently, I’m living in Moscow and pursuing a master’s degree in Population and Development at HSE University.

Choosing HSE and moving to Russia was not just an academic decision—it was a leap of faith.

I was drawn to HSE because of its international reputation, strong academic foundation, and interdisciplinary programmes

My programme in Population and Development stood out for its unique blend of analytical tools and policy-oriented learning. It’s exactly what I was looking for to deepen my understanding of public well-being and development planning.

Academically, I’ve been lucky to study under some truly inspiring professors. One who stands out is Alexander Larionov, whose ability to explain complex ideas with clarity has made a lasting impression on me. His classes don’t just teach facts; they encourage reflection and real-world application. He teaches Public Administration, and his classes helped me understand the real-world functioning of governance and public policy from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

Living in Moscow

Living in Moscow has been a rewarding experience

I stay in a Dormitory No. 10 at HSE, which has been a hub of friendships, cultural exchange, and shared learning. What I love most about this city is its energy—the way it mixes history with modernity, calm green parks with a vibrant urban pulse. One of my favourite places is Kuskovsky Forest Park. It’s my go-to spot for long walks, reflection, and peace amidst nature.

Of course, moving to a new country came with its challenges. The biggest one was the language barrier in the beginning. But Moscow is a city that welcomes effort, and even a few words in Russian opened doors and sparked smiles. Slowly, with the support of people around me and the dynamic HSE community, I adapted.

I learned to be patient with myself, ask questions, and stay open-minded

Moscow has become more than just a place of study—it’s become part of my story. I’ve explored cities like St Petersburg, Vladimir, and Suzdal, each offering a glimpse into Russia’s vast cultural and historical richness. These journeys have shaped me just as much as my academic experiences.

My Extracurricular Activities and Summer Plans

Beyond academics, I try to keep my life balanced. I practice yoga regularly, which helps me stay centred and focused. I’m also actively involved in student life. As president of the HSE Indian Club, I’ve had the honour of organising major cultural events like Holi, Unity Fest, and the Culture Café. These moments of celebration are more than fun—they’re opportunities to connect cultures, build friendships, and promote understanding.

As I look ahead, my plans for the summer include continuing with academic projects and exploring opportunities in the development sector

After graduation, I hope to pursue a career in public policy or social development, working on real-world challenges related to population, governance, and equity.

My time at HSE has shaped not only my knowledge but also my character

It’s taught me how to think critically, lead with empathy, and dream with purpose. I’m grateful for the people, places, and perspectives that have become a part of my life here, and I carry them with me into whatever comes next.
