On October 16 Mauro Artigiani (National University of Colombia) will speak on 'Symmetries of infinite translation surfaces' at the seminar of the International Laboratory of Cluster Geometry.

Abstract:

A surface is of infinite topological type if its fundamental group is not finitely generated. In this talk, we will consider the following question: give an infinite type surface S and an abstract group G, is there a translation surface structure on S such that its isometry group is exactly G? We will also (partially) address the related question for Veech groups (linked to affinities of the translation surface). Our methods are inspired by the recent work on hyperbolic surfaces by Aougab, Patel and Vlamis. This is a joint work with A. Randecker, C. Sadanand, F. Valdez and G. Weitze-Schmithüsen.
