Seminar on Monetary Sovereignty

Event ended

On May 25th and 26th the Laboratory will conduct the interdisciplinary seminar 'Monetary Sovereignty and Economic Development'. It will be the debut event of a large-scale research project on the issues of monetary sovereignty. Key speakers at the seminar will be globally-recognised international experts, who shall come specially to Moscow to work with Russian researchers to engage in brainstorming on the project dedicated to monetary sovereignty.

This research project aims to explore the institutional and regulatory nature of money, currency, and financial constraints, and promotes the idea of monetary sovereignty, which is interpreted as the autonomy of states for the organisation of their monetary circulation and the legitimisation of a country's right to implement its own monetary policy.

The seminar will discuss key aspects of monetary sovereignty, their relevance to the international community and for Russia in the context of today's political and economic climate; the effects of limiting and reducing the sovereignty of individual countries due to their entry into monetary unions; the role of technology in strengthening monetary sovereignty (especially payment and clearing systems).

Also on the agenda is the discussion of future research work, the milestones of the research and the possibilities for institutional cooperation on the project.

Participation is open to students, graduates, graduate students, lectures and researchers, economists and lawyers, representatives of government regulatory bodies and private and public financial institutions.

The seminar will be held in Auditorium 518, Myasnitskaya Street 9/11. On May 25th the discussion is scheduled for the second half of the day, starting from 1pm. Then on May 26th, the expert work continues all day from 9:30am through to 5pm.
